Episode 1 Review (Contains Spoilers)
The first episode of Mayfair Witches opens with a doctor visiting an elderly woman. We learn that he is the new doctor assigned to her and is supposed to give her a Thorazine shot. However, upon seeing his patient and her surroundings, he decides to review her reports before starting the daily procedure.
Meanwhile, 2000 miles away, we are introduced to Rowan Fielding, a talented neurosurgeon living on a boat with her adoptive mother. It quickly becomes apparent that she is skilled at her job, but faces occasional pressure from her superior. When Rowan discovers that her adoptive mother’s cancer has returned, she seeks help from her superior, only to be insulted and treated disrespectfully. In response, she unknowfully kills him using her mind, leading her to suspect that there may be more to her life than she previously thought.
We also meet Deirdre Mayfair, a young woman desperate to escape the difficult life imposed on her by her aunt. She is also in love with a man named Lasher, whom her aunt does not approve of. These three storylines intertwine and offer unexpected developments by the end of the episode.
Episode 1 Ending
The episode ends with the doctor from the beginning removing a necklace from his patient, revealing scratches on her chest that suggest she was trying to remove it herself. He calls her Deirdre Mayfair and tells her that he will no longer give her the shot, wanting to see who she is without the medication that keeps her sedated. Rowan wakes up late at night due to a noise and sees Lasher on her deck before he disappears.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Mayfair Witches Episode 1 establishes an intriguing foundation for the series. The way the story was presented in the first episode was engaging and easily drew the viewer in. The use of dark and neutral colors added to the potentially grim tone of the show. However, better music and acting from the cast would improve the series. As it stands, the first episode is off to a strong start.
