As reported by the latest news, two more earthquakes have occurred in Hatay after two major earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş that affected 11 cities. Following the 6.4 magnitude earthquake centered in Defne, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in Samandağ three minutes later. The earthquakes that happened three minutes apart were felt strongly in many cities. AFAD warned not to enter damaged buildings. It was reported that some people were trapped under debris in some buildings.
According to the information received from AFAD, an earthquake measuring 6.4 occurred at 8:04 p.m. with the epicenter in Defne, Hatay. The depth of the earthquake was determined as 16.74 kilometers. While the earthquake was felt strongly, citizens panicked.

It was reported that some people were trapped under debris in some buildings.

HEATERS IN TENTS FELL OVER

GEOLOGIST TÜYSÜZ: A TRIGGERED EARTHQUAKE, NOT AN AFTERSHOCK

Geologist Okan Tüysüz made the following assessment during the live broadcast on NTV: “This is a triggered earthquake, not an aftershock. There is a fault from Antakya to the Mediterranean. The European Seismological Agency reports it as 6.6. The place where the fault was broken was the place where stress had accumulated. The Göksun-Savrun Fault is still a region that can create earthquakes. Earthquakes occur in this region every few thousand years, but the balances have changed significantly. The north of the earthquake that occurred on February 6th is the Bingöl-Palu region, where stress accumulates and triggering is likely. We need to be careful in these regions. It is a fault that rose to the surface and caused surface fractures measuring 6.4. There could be another one of this magnitude between Antakya and Samandağ.”

IMPORTANT WARNING FROM AFAD

After the earthquakes, AFAD warned not to enter damaged buildings. In the statement made by AFAD, it was said “Do not enter the damaged buildings in the region under any circumstances after the earthquake. Do not stay around risky buildings. For accurate information, follow official sources and institutions.”

Warning from AFAD: Stay Away from the Coastline

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) issued a warning that the water level may rise along the coastline. According to the statement, it is important for citizens to stay away from the coastline as a precaution against the risk of up to 50 cm rise in sea level.

Heavily Damaged Buildings Demolished

During the earthquake, damaged buildings collapsed. Mehmet Akif Ersoy, Faruk Aksoy, and Fevzi Çakır, who were broadcasting live from Hatay for Habertürk TV, felt the earthquake and reported what was happening in Hatay.

The effect of the earthquake created a cloud of dust in the debris zone in Hatay, and the sound of ambulances was heard. According to reports, some buildings collapsed.

AFAD reported that another earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 centered in Samandağ, Hatay occurred at 20:07. The last earthquake in Hatay’s Samandağ with a magnitude of 3.9 occurred at 20:13.

Returning to Villages in Şanlıurfa

One of the cities where the earthquake was felt was Şanlıurfa. It was learned that citizens who entered undamaged houses went back out after the earthquake, and the majority headed towards the villages.

“Earthquakes Will Continue” Warning

While ambulance sounds were heard from some regions, it was observed that citizens were anxious. Experts expressed that the previous earthquakes triggered these earthquakes. A warning was issued that the earthquakes would continue in the region.
