A Look Back at Lane’s Storied Career
Barry Lane began playing golf at the age of 14 and quickly rose through the ranks to become an assistant professional at Downshire Golf Club. He joined the European Tour in 1982 and won his first tournament at the Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club in 1987. The following year, he won the Scottish Open by three strokes at Gleneagles, defeating José Rivero and Sandy Lyle in the process.
Lane had a winning streak from 1992 to 1995, placing no lower than 11th on the European Tour Order of Merit. In 1993, he was selected for the Ryder Cup team and won the Canon European Masters. He went on to win four more times on the Tour, with his last victory coming at the British Masters at Forest of Arden in 2004. In 1995, he also won the Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf, the predecessor to the annual WGC Match Play championship.
In addition to his Ryder Cup and European Tour appearances, Lane also represented England in three World Cup appearances, played in four Dunhill Cups, and participated in the UBS Cup three times for the Rest of the World squad.
